2nd Saturdays: Your One-Stop Shop on The West Side

Heading to a tailgate but forgot about that extra paint, broken appliance, or old couch you’ve been storing in the back of your truck? Planning to get your lawn ready before the colder weather ahead? Let Metro Waste Authority help you prep for fall!

Metro Waste Authority offers a convenient drop-off in Grimes, the 2nd Saturday of the month, March through November. The Metro Northwest Transfer Station is open from 8:00 AM-Noon for a variety of services, including:

  • Residential Garbage Drop-Off: Sometimes your garbage cart just isn’t big enough! Get rid of extra garbage or large items during 2nd Saturdays for a fee.

  • Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off: Don’t hoard household hazardous waste this winter! Common household items like bleach, rechargeable batteries, oil-based paints, lawn chemicals such as fertilizers or weed killer, old motor oil or gasoline, and energy efficient lightbulbs (CFL) are all accepted during 2nd Saturdays for free, up to 75 pounds.

  • Free Recycling Drop-Offs: Bring those bulky cardboard boxes and extra recyclables to our free recycling drop-offs at Metro Northwest Transfer Station! The facility has cardboard-only, glass-only, and mixed recycling drop-off containers available for residents.

  • Compost for Purchase:  Want to give your lawn or garden some extra nutrients before the ground freezes? A self-serve compost station at Metro Northwest Transfer Station offers Grow Gold Compost for $4/bag. Each bag is approximately 2 cubic feet of compost.

The Metro Northwest Transfer Station is located at 4105 SE Beisser Dr., Grimes.
